Leviticus 19:2
Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.”
Scripture Insights
“We are made for larger ends than Earth can encompass. Oh, let us be true to our exalted destiny” (Catherine Booth).
It is easy to be lost in cultural uncertainty and feel anxious and overwhelmed by the lack of common sense. Common sense doesn’t come from a common place. Moses, in all his storied leadership and insight, was not the source of his own wisdom. Likewise, we are not the source of wisdom. Leviticus reminds us that commonsense wisdom is only from God. We seek God’s wisdom and God’s holiness, which is the source of all wisdom. His holiness holds all virtues in perfect balance.
We are invited to recognize this holy ideal not only as coming from God but as our calling as well. We seek and commit our lives to nothing less than the holiness of God manifest through us and into the world. God’s calling to be holy as he is holy is the higher end for which we are made and the exalted destiny to which we are called.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, you are the only source of holiness. Only you can hold all virtues in perfect balance. Search, teach, and show me where my life is out of balance. As I surrender, make me holy as you are holy.
