John 16:33

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Scripture Insights

A relationship with Jesus is often associated with inner peace. After all, he promised us peace, and he is the Prince of Peace. However, Jesus was also honest about troubles we will have in the world, indicating that we may experience external trouble while having internal peace. While some external trouble may be thrust upon us through no choice of our own, such as the storm that descended upon the disciples in Mark 4, other trouble may result from our own decisions.

Therefore, peace is a gift from Christ, but it can also be a choice. Choosing peace comes in many forms, such as never backbiting, avoiding gossip, keeping confidence, and treating everyone the way we want to be treated (see Matthew 7:12). When we choose Jesus, we choose the Prince of Peace. The closer we follow him, the more he will guide us in pathways of peace. In other words, more Jesus means less drama and a greater witness to a troubled world.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, fill my heart with the fountain of your peace. Help me make choices that foster peace in all my relationships so I may bring others to you.
