Matthew 9:37–38

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask
the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Scripture Insights

A sun-kissed sea of golden wheat, ready to harvest, is breathtaking to behold. One can only imagine the endless possibilities a field can produce in bread, pas ta, and confectionary delights—that is, if the field is harvested. If the wheat is left unharvested, it will simply wither and die, and all possibilities will be lost.

Jesus uses the harvest metaphor to call his followers to pray for workers who will join the mission of reaching the lost. The potential is vast, and the stakes are high—eternal life, or death for the multitudes. We must heed this call to prayer.

Next, Jesus commissions them and sends them into the fields to gather in the harvest. Isn’t our God amazing? He calls us to pray, then invites us to be come the answer to the prayer. Spectacular! Imagine the endless possibilities he can accomplish through you if you are willing to both pray for workers and be one to go to work in his fields! Nothing will be impossible for you (see Matthew 17:20)

Today’s Prayer

Lord of the harvest, we pray that you will send out workers, and we are willing for
you to send us. Help us to be prayerful, fearless, and faithful as we go.
