John 1:38–41

Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

Scripture Insights

In John 1, Andrew and Simon Peter are introduced to Jesus, the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. Though both follow, they have not officially left their nets as seen in the other Gospels. After spending time with Jesus, Andrew hurries to find his brother, Simon Peter.

The first recorded question of Jesus to his disciples is found here in John 1:38 when he asks, “What are you seeking?” (NASB). Jesus’s question is a great one for us today as well. People are driven by a wide variety of things—guilt, resentment, fear, stuff, and the need for approval, to name a few.

Jesus also makes this big statement as they share together: “Come and see.” When we spend time with Jesus, we will find purpose and meaning in our lives—so much so that we will want to share it, just like Andrew did with Simon. We literally can’t keep it to ourselves because it is not only good news but the greatest news ever.

Today’s Prayer

God, help us to seek the right things, and help us to spend time with you on a daily basis so that we stay amazed by your love and are driven to share it with those around us.
