Timothy 2:2

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

Scripture Insights

Have you ever watched a runner in a relay race drop the baton? It is a heart- breaking letdown, no matter the level of the competition. It is one thing to fail in an individual event, and that is disappointing enough. In a team event, the heartbreak is multiplied. The runner who drops the baton feels the weight of wasting the effort of the runners who went before as well as depriving those running after of their opportunity.

In today’s scripture, Paul is stressing to his protégé Timothy that he has been entrusted with a message and charged to hand it off to others who will not fumble it. In the New Beacon Bible Commentary 1 & 2 Timothy/Titus, David A. Ackerman describes Timothy’s privilege and predicament well: “Timothy is the vital link in a chain from past to future” (309).

You are too. So am I. All who have received the gospel are.

By God’s grace, may we prove to be reliable people, not only by having the faith to receive the gospel but also by faithfully passing it on.

Today’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, our souls long for your kingdom to come, for your will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. May we have the faith to receive this gospel and the faithfulness to pass it on.
