Ephesians 5:1-2

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Scripture Insights

It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But here, Paul is saying that imitation of Christ is the sincerest form of love and a product of the love he first offers us. Paul tells us to follow God’s example and walk in the way of love, but we can only do that by claiming our identity as dearly loved children of God. In other words, you cannot give what you have not received.

Growing up in the ’90s, there were two people I wanted to be just like: Ken Griffey Jr. and my older brother, Cameron. Griffey was the coolest baseball player in the world, and I imitated him every time I stepped onto the field. But when I wasn’t playing baseball, I wanted to be like Cameron, not because he was cool, but because I knew he loved me. When you know you belong in the love of Christ, you naturally seek to become like Christ as a response. You have to receive love before you can become love!

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank you for loving me first. I receive your love right here, right now. I pray that you hold me in your love and send me from your love so that I can love those around me.
